F/L McMillan was on an unarmed Spitfire (#PM142) photo reconnaissance mission covering the withdrawal of German ships from Danish waters the day after hostilities had ceased in Europe.

His aircraft was hit by flak from the ships and blew up off the east coast of Denmark while flying low level with F/L P.G. Wigle.

An excellent article of F/L MacMillan's encounter can be read at Airwar Over Denmark. With further information available HERE.

Following is the after action report prepared by F/L Wigle who was flying F/L McMillan's wing.
