In his 96th year, Lloyd passed peacefully at Blackadar Retirement Residence in Dundas on November 25, 2013.
Loving husband of 62 years of the late Margit Smith; father to Tom (Doris-Anne De Wildt-Smith) and Peter (Patricia Jefkins-Smith); grandfather to Laura (Jason Honegger), Alison (Kevin Morgan), Elizabeth (Scott Dunlop), Karin, Kathryn, Bryan and Kristin; great grandfather to Daniel and Caelan Honegger.
Lloyd was born in Toronto in 1918, the fifth child of Henry John Smith and Mary Ellen (Maude) McNamara.
Growing up in the depression, he graduated high school in 1936 but his family could not afford university. He began his working career as a messenger and then hospital elevator operator at Toronto Western Hospital and joined the air force reserve. Called up on September 3, 1939, Lloyd sailed for England in Feb 1940 and served in Britain, Canada and again in Britain until August 1945 with the 110 and 400 squadrons RCAF, rising to the rank of Warrant Officer in charge of photographic reconnaissance units.

Following his discharge, Lloyd enrolled in Engineering Physics at University of Toronto in 1946, where he met Margit (also an Engineering Physics Student). Following graduation, they married on May 26, 1951. Lloyd began his career in Industrial Engineering at Stelco before moving to Hamilton Institute of Technology (later Mohawk College) where he remained a professor until his first “retirement” in 1983. He remained with Mohawk until the early 1990’s teaching as a seasonal instructor in their adult retraining programs.
Lloyd was a remarkable man. During the war, he was one of the first to develop colour photographs outside of Kodak labs. At Stelco, Lloyd was an early computer pioneer, attending courses at IBM’s Thomas J. Watson labs in 1955. Also while at Stelco, Lloyd graduated in McMaster’s first MBA class.
At H.I.T. and Mohawk, Lloyd taught mainly computer studies in the Industrial Management Technology Department, starting 1962 through to his retirement. He bought his first IBM PC in 1981 and even bought an e-reader at age 93.
He was a loving husband, father and grandfather, a teacher, a tinkerer, wood carver and a collector. He loved politics and passionate debate and since he was named after a famous British prime minister, Sir David Lloyd George, he was an ardent supporter of provincial and federal Liberal parties. Most of all, he was our dad, granddad and great-granddad and we loved him.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Blackadar Retirement Residence for their loving care of Lloyd as well as Doctor Nash who cared for him for so many years.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any donations in his memory be made to the Dundas Salvation Army Food Bank.
To honour his memory, we will be hosting a memorial for friends and family to share and celebrate his life. This will take place on Sunday January 5, 2014 in Dundas.
